IN SITU PROJECTS & PERFORMANCES

01db10

Project "01db10"

Το project «01db10» αποτελείται από τρείς in situ εγκαταστάσεις για το Action Field Kodra 2015.

Project “01db10”

Project “01db10” consists of three in situ installations prepared for the Action Field Kodra 2015 Exhibition. Following a few telephone conversations with my curator Dimitris Michalaros, we both realized that I had been mishearing the exhibition’s theme; I had been hearing Eros rather than the actual word, Error. The theme itself became a hearing error and by that very fact, I was on-topic. I thought that I could take advantage of this ‘mistake’ in a rather creative manner. Overcoming my initial hesitation, I shared my thoughts of a new project with my curator. He enthusiastically agreed to change the initial proposal and for me to work on projects about communication errors resulting from mishearing. The interactive and playful nature of these works aims at active audience participation so as to highlight and comment on related taboos and stereotypes. The everyday life of a person who is hard of hearing is filled with such errors, which sometimes causing laughter, sometimes mockery and at other times serious accidents. This one was one of my most fortunate errors.

Αλλαγή Συχνοτήτων στα 10 decibel

Change Frequency to 10 decibel

01db10

01db10

Lip reading is the only language many postlingually deaf people (deaf after the third or fourth year of life), who have chosen to speak with the hearing people (listening, spoken language and lip reading - LSL) and not learn sign language, recognise. To this day, ignorance and the prevalence of several stereotypes, such as the one equating deafness with the use of sign language, exclude deaf lip readers from both deaf and hearing communities.

The mirror image of ‘d’ gives the letter ‘b’. The word ‘decibel’ means sound volume. The ‘rule’ of the interactive game 01db10 is communication through lip reading and a sound volume spanning 01 to 10 decibel, this range being the sound volume which usually goes undetected by the human ear. Essentially, the use of the board educates the audience in another language, registering their own mishaps. (Perhaps Freud, along with slips of the tongue, pen and reading, would have added the slips of lip reading).

Change of Frequencies at 10 decibel

Accessing a world that is designed and organised to cater for the hearing people is a difficult to impossible feat for the deaf and hearing impaired. In the video – installation Change of frequency at 10 decibel, I turn the tables. Therefore, I create a voiceless environment, where most hearing people unsuccessfully try to ‘listen to’ a number of autobiographical and statistic data about hearing loss, which are spoken by the lips projected on the video. By contrast, a person who is deaf or hearing impaired can ‘listen’ with their eyes, provided they are familiar with the use of lip reading. Superimposing extra pairs of lips over the pre-existing ones increases the level of ‘reading’ difficulty. Corresponding natural hurdles for lip readers would be surgical masks, a beard or whatever impedes their ability to focus on the lips they are reading. The results of the audience recordings appear on the led display and are illegible of course; just as public audio announcements are unintelligible for the deaf and hard of hearing. In fact, in Greece, the demand for visual signs in public spaces as well as the subtitling of news programs and same-language on Public Televisions has been disregarded so far.

Phonological Awareness

Phonological Awareness

During the sound performance Phonological Awareness, I make a sarcastic comment on the medico-educational term of the same name, which refers to the recognition of sound structures in words by babies and people suffering from dyslexia.  I sketch some ‘scores’ with paronymous words, which are transmitted from the transmitter (the artist) to the receiver (the audience) through tins connected with a spring rather than a string, in a simulation of the broken telephone game. Words are following by an echo, further distorting the ‘voices’. In this way, understanding becοmes constantly self–cancelling; for example, the articulated word “error” can very well end up being received as “eros”, “epos” “etos” (year), etc. This kind of communication difficulty between two speakers creates confusion, insecurity and desperation, feelings often experienced by a person who is hearing impaired.

BETWEEN

BETWEEN

“Between 1” and “Between 2” are two in situ sound performances which I created in the context of Megas Medie’s workshop “Performance Practice”. They were inspired by the thought that “in this room I am usually a hearing person but in the next room I am hard of hearing”. These artworks were performed at “Twixtlab” in the summer of 2016.

Between 1

Between 1

Between 1

During the sound performance Between 1, I chart sounds which are heard from an adjacent room. A participant produces natural sounds of different volumes following the instructions on the cards I have designed. Alternately using blue paper tape to represent sound and white tape to represent silence, I create an optical pattern of dotted lines, leaving the imprint of my actual hearing on the floor.

Between 2

Between 2

Between 2

Between 2 is a sound performance during which two speakers reproduce random recorded sounds of different volumes. Interacting with these sounds in real time, my voice is heard from the other two woofers, sometimes shouting “a little bit louder” and sometimes requesting “a little bit lower”. Depending on the sound volume, the woofers bounce and along with them the hearing aids that are placed on the woofers, creating a sound pattern which is repeated constantly at a growing or dwindling pace. In an attempt to become the adjuster of an imaginary scale between hearing and moderate poor hearing, the point of balance is constantly tested.

Hearing Instrument

Paralleling the title of the artwork "Hearing Instrument" with a "Musical Instrument", I define hearing aids as musical instruments. By amplifying the sound the hearing aids transmit from their feedback through a microphone, I then process it on the computer and compose it with birdsong, with which it resembles.I design a music sheet based on my audiogram and more specific on the five lines which touch the borderline of my hearing and I identify them with an elastic musical pentagram. Composing the sounds this way, I make an ironic remark on moderate hearing loss, since high frequencies of 4000 – 8000Hz are the ones that a hard of hearing person usually is deprived of.

This work was presented in May 2017 at Sound Acts III and was hosted and supported by Athens & Epidaurus Festival.

Behind The Obvious Sound

My proposal for Sounding Paths Residency 2018 aimed in creating an electronic profile of human steps so the musical extension of these daily sounds, along with rhythm through repetition, silence and intensity, will be brought out. Steps that define us and betray us, warn us or disorientate us, are imposing or surprising, steps that are provoking or silent, steps like keys on keyboards… For ten days and during different times of the day, an in situ observation and systematic documentation of this activity in the interior spaces of the Old Jesuit Monastery where all the participants were accommodated, and the exterior space of the mazy alleys of Ano Syros took place. By intensifying the possibilities of the steps, I sometimes used a variety of handy materials that I casually put in designated points of these two spaces. The sound performance "Behind The Obvious Sound" was presented to the public at the Monastery in July of 2018 before closing the residency.

Sounding Paths residency program was part of the Interfaces network and supported by the Onassis Stegi & the Creative Europe Program of the European Union.

DIY Instrument Making & Hacking

As a part of the "DIY instrument making & hacking" three-day workshop, running by Οnassis Cultural Centre Athens and Interfaces in January of 2019, was to put in an open performance to the public. These are a few fragments of our free improvisation with Dimitra Kousteridou and Zina Sarris at  Στέγη Ιδρύματος Ωνάση / Οnassis Cultural Centre Athens.

Wallear

The "Wallear", is an in situ improvisation that took place at "Kassandras" space on April 2019. Within "OnMaterials" context, I decided to use materials such as paper and metal sheets. In order to emphasize the human presence in an interior space I invited the dancer Anna Apergi to perform and interact with me physically, through the sound of movements, as well as aurally. Exploring the acoustics of this place my aim is to make a comment on the difficulty in hearing the everyday sounds which are hidden behind the walls.

Two Ears Are Not Enough

Το έργο "Two Ears Are Not Enough" σχετίζεται με τα προβλήματα ακοής αναζητώντας την ενσυναισθητική ταύτιση του ακροατή με τη βαρηκοΐα.

The "Two Ears Are Not Enough" is associated with hearing problems seeking a different empathic experience of the audience with hearing loss. Undefined sounds, coming from unknown sources, can cause me confusion, letting my imagination relate them with things or happenings from different sources. This piece was created for "SHAWR" Space21 Radio Art Festival in Iraqi Kurdistan and was broadcasted online on December 15th, 2020.

The piece was aired on May 10th, 2023 on CJSW Radio in Calgary, Canada as part of the "Ears Have Eyes" platform.

The piece "Έρως" (Eros) was created in 2021 after the Twixtlab's team invitation to participate in one of the podcasts which aired on TWIXTlove radio, as part of a radio program about love (14/02/2021-14/03/2021). The piece is a new rendering of the "Phonological Awareness", a sound performance presented in Action Field Kodra Festival, 2015. Using the previous ‘scores’ as my ‘sketches’ of the performance, which I draw from different Greek paronymous words, composing a new narration about hearing loss and being in love.

Earground

The "Earground" project consists of thirteen in situ sound sculptures and installations for an extended open air, manually operated, playground for the ears, which was mounted on Strofilia Beach in Greece in August 2021. After many long lasting and strict Covid-19 quarantines and many protective measures for the public health, I had a strong need to create an interactive and playful installation, aiming for audiences who could participate by touching and activating the sculptures themselves, in order to listen to their sound. This work consists of research on how specific materials affect the quality of the sound created by each one of them. The basic materials of this project are reeds, picked from the same region, metals and ceramics.

Soundprint

To έργο είναι μια in situ ηχητική εγκατάσταση και διαδραστική performance για τα  PERFORMANCE ROOMS2022 της Γκαλερί Καππάτου η οποία παρουσιάστηκε από τις 10-15 Μαρτίου του 2022 στο ξενοδοχείο  St George Lycabettus στην Αθήνα.

When the spaces in which we move or the time we spend wandering in them are imposingly quiet, the sounds that are emitted from our steps might seem annoying to others and might cause embarrassment or even stress. Inspired by my everyday life experiences I created the piece "Soundprint",  curated by Maria Xypolopoulou. This artwork is an in situ sound installation and an interactive performance which was created for the PERFORMANCE ROOMS2022 and the Kappatos Gallery.  It was presented from 10-15th of March 2022 at the 108-109 rooms of the St George Lycabettus Hotel in Athens.

By utilising two different rooms, I tried to create a communication bridge between the audience and me, through an empathetic experience with hearing loss. Meanwhile the participants’ activity left "traces” of its kineso-auditory polygraph in the space. The way I worked with the sounds aimed to confuse and disorientate the audience.

In these rooms no one was walking silently, no step remained a secret, no body was mute. On the contrary, by embodying the space and furniture, every move of ours was revealed. We became the parasites of our own selves walking on a ground that honks or seating on furniture that breathes and constantly betrays us. My intention was to provoke sounds that we wouldn’t dare make in a conventional space, to be ironic and sarcastic with our selves, to go past proper behavioral expectations and social attitudes that guide human behaviors, and finally accept and love our sounds.
